Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, helps patients relax during their dental visits. The child will be given a small breathing mask to place over their nose, and the gas will take up to 20 minutes to take full effect. Inhaling nitrous oxide allows the patient to remain fully awake and keep all natural reflexes. They will just experience a sense of calmness and some light-headedness. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recognizes this technique as a safe, effective technique to use for treating children’s dental needs. When the procedure is over, the child will breathe pure oxygen just to clear out any remaining effects of nitrous oxide.

Accent Dental Wentzville currently offers nitrous oxide, oral sedatives, and general anesthesia for patients who may require it. For general anesthesia, we partner with Premier Dental Anesthesiology to provide safe sedation during the dental procedure. Each treatment is performed in our office by a state licensed board certified anesthesiologist.

General Anesthesia

General anesthesia will be provided by a board certified anesthesiologist and the anesthesia team from Premier Dental Anesthesiology.  Oral or nasal sedatives will be given prior to separation from the parents or caregiver.  In a matter of minutes, the sedation will allow for an easier separation from parents or caregiver and the child will be taken to the treatment room.  Parents or caregivers will be shown to the waiting room and reunited with the child in the recovery room for wakeup.  In the treatment room, general anesthesia will be induced as the child breathes into an anesthesia mask.  After the child is completely asleep, an IV and nasal breathing tube will be placed.  Upon completion of the dental treatment, the IV and breathing tube will be removed and the child moved to the recovery room.  In recovery, the child will awaken in the presence of the parents or caregiver.  Children can be safely discharged after approximately 30 minutes in the recovery room.

Missouri State Law requires medical insurance to cover anesthesia for the following individuals:

  • A child under the age of five.
  • A person who is severely disabled.
  • Someone who has a medical or behavioral condition which requires general anesthesia when dental care is needed.
There are however some patients who are not candidates for in-office anesthesia due to medical conditions. These patients will need to be treated in a hospital setting. Please call your dentist in Wentzville, MO to find out if your child is a candidate.

Accent Dental partners with Premier Dental Anesthesiology, which provides in-office dental anesthesia by board certified anesthesiologists.
